Elite Athletes and Teams.
We work with elite, junior and pro athletes from a variety of sports. Thier talent and determination is an inspiration!

Mac Brown - Professional Triathlete.
Mac moved across the country from Virginia Beach, VA in the Fall of 2003 to San Diego for the weather and general lifestyle. Once he moved out here, he bought a road bike and rode as much as he could (no running or swimming at all). It was not until 2004 that he began to compete in multisport races (duathlon) and 2005 was his first year competing in triathlons. The company he was working for at the time flew him out to Kona to watch the Ironman World Championship and Mac immediately fell in love with the sport. He promised himself that he would not return to the island until he earned the right to toe the starting line for the race. Mac first began with some shorter distance triathlons in 2005 and then in 2006 he attempted his first Ironman in Coeur d’Alene. Mac had finally earned his right to compete in Hawaii and it was everything he had imagined it to be and more.

Mac is also the current head coach of the UCSD Triathlon program, a coach with Multisports.com and a Level 1 USAT certified coach.

Grady Funk - Elite Triathlete.
Congratulations to Grady for being named "2008 USAT All American" by USA Triathlon, the official governing body of triathlon in the US.

Originally from Kailua Hawaii on the island of Oahu, Grady's family moved out here in 1986 where he grew up and went to High School in Fullerton. His athletic background comes from Football, Basketball, Track, and Surfing. Attending San Diego State to play football in 1998, things didn't really go his way. After being out of the competitive world for a few years, he knew he had to get back into athletics somehow.

So, Grady borrowed a road bike from a friend in San Diego and fell in love with cycling. In 2006, Grady says he went to Kona to watch his friend compete in the Ironman World Championships and got the biggest adrenaline rush he ever had, and just as a spectator! He knew at that moment, he had to somehow compete in that race!

Andy Bailey - Challenged Athlete.
In December 2006, Andy was struck by a van delivering dry cleaning at a neighbor's house. During his second week in the hospital, a MRSA infection - a so-called "superbug" that is resistant to most common antibiotics - set in and wouldn't be vanquished. It was in July 2007 that doctors first suggested amputation. "I'm a runner, a triathlete. I was shocked," Bailey said. "The thought of not having a leg - that's something that never in my wildest thoughts would happen to me."

Now, Bailey's stump has almost finished shrinking, and soon he will be fitted with a permanent socket.

JT and Kendal - Elite Athletes.
Kendal has played soccer professionally in Sweden and is currently the head coach of the girl's varsity soccer team at El Toro high school.

JT played centerfield for the Los Angeles Dodgers in summer development league, and has studied and trained Muay Thai boxing with heavyweight champion Wade Halvorson for 5 years. Additionally, he played Juco level basketball in Sacramento.

Kenny Trader - Elite Athlete.

Michael Lewis - Elite Racing.
Congratulations to Michael Lewis, who has earned the "Rookie of the Year" driver championship. "I knew that I had to keep my focus, learn the track, be fast and qualify in the top four to have a chance to compete for the Rookie Championship," explained Michael.

Michael is well known on the Kart racing circuit as a leader. Karting is commonly perceived as the stepping stone to the higher and more expensive ranks of motorsports. Karts vary in speed and some (known as Superkarts) can reach speeds exceeding 160 mph (250 km/h).

Jennifer & Mike Chalmers - Endurance Athletes.
Husband and wife, Jen and Mike Chalmers, recently joined SPI to take advantage of the expert training and guidance of our Elite Athlete programs. Jen has won her age-group in numerous Ironman and 70.3 distance triathlons while Mike was 2007 overall amateur champion at the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon.

JETCycling - Junior Cycling Team.
Mike Catanzaro is currently working with the team members from JETCycling. JETCycling has a vision to grow the sport of cycling in North America. Their goal is to build a junior cycling development program that rivals that of club sports.

Working with juniors between the ages of 10 to 18, Sport Performance is providing cross training on a weekly basis to help build the foundation of junior competitive road cycling.

Aaron Clousing - Endurance Athlete.
Aaron started working out with Mike Catanzaro and Nick Bernatowicz in Mid-Janurary. "I have to say that at first I was a little skeptical, but by the end of the first half hour I felt like I was back in camp for crew." Aaron had his first race for the season at the end of March in Coronado, at SuperFrog a Half-Ironman distance race. "I had my fastest Half-Ironman time yet. I know it was because of my constant workouts with Mike and Nick that I finished, and felt so strong. I was ahead of my goal by nearly 25 minutes."

Notable Athletes to Watch.
We also like to highlight those athletes that bring a special focus to their sport as well as those emerging and up-and-coming athletes in our community.
We teach the athlete and their families about exercise, nutrition, rest and recovery. We teach them about sport specific exercise and injury reduction. But most importantly we enhance their life skills through teaching them about respect and discipline. We create an environment where each athlete can learn the importance of encouragement and motivation. In the end, it is our goal to uplift and encourage every athlete we meet. Then we can truly say that we have empowered our athletes to do the same for others.
